When it comes to writing and filming a sequel to a much loved indie-classic like Clerks (1994), you're going to have your work cut out of you. The original movie - filmed on a shoestring budget - gave a near perfect depiction of what it's like to be a know-it-all, twenty-something with a complete lack of direction.

The movie's charm lay in its approach to depicting the daily conversation of those who have just enough life experience to talk the talk and not enough to really walk it. It was a stark but humorous mirror of the types of conversation everyone has during their early 20s.

The second movie didn't really capture the same magic. The actors were older, and so were the characters. They'd gone from working in a video store to working a fast food joint. The charm of the younger characters had been replaced with a willing ignorance rather than a youthful naivety. Even so, Kevin Smith still wrote some pretty good moments for this follow-up.

Being the Star Wars nerd he is, Smith jumped at the chance to compare that franchise with The Lord of the Rings. We were treated to a couple of nerds duking it out over which trilogy is superior. Both sides made some pretty good points - namely, that The Return of the King does have too many endings.
