10 Best War Films NOT About The US Military
1. Days Of Glory (2006)
Finally, we have another less represented topic, the African contribution in World War Two. Paths of Glory, directed by Rachid Bouchareb, is about the Northern Africa soldiers who fought alongside the Free French Forces to liberate France and its colonies.
These severely underappreciated men played their part in the Allied campaigns, but were often subject to horrendous racism upon joining the military. Having often never seen France themselves, the film's message can be summed up with one quote from Le Chants des Africains: "we come from the colonies to save the motherland, we come from afar to die, we are the men of Africa"
Beginning in the south of France with Operation Dragoon, Days of Glory lays bare the disgraceful treatment the African soldiers received from being refused leave to being used as cannon fodder to secure enemy positions. Paths of Glory makes it clear that African men were not only fighting a war of retaliation but also one of inequality, as the legacy of French colonialism weighed heavily on their efforts. It still resonates today with modern discussions on race. It made such an impact that the French government began to recognise pension rights for African soldiers who served soon after its release.
We highly recommend all ten of the films discussed. Did we miss any other war films not from the US perspective? Let us know
