10 Big 2020 Movies You Should Be Worried About

6. Mulan

Disney

Disney might feel differently about their recent remakes than movie fans do. They’ve generally been panned as being derivative cash grabs with nothing original to say, and none have made a significant mark on popular culture. But if they were indeed a cynical cash grab, Disney emptied out our pockets with both hands.

In that regard, there’s little to be worried about with Mulan. The animated version is as beloved as the other Walt Disney classics to get the live action treatment, plus should see a boom in the Asian marketplace too. Mulan will make a ton of cash, no questions asked.

What’s less clear though is how good it will actually be. None of the remakes have come close to the originals, and Mulan is cutting out fan favourite character Mushu this time around. It doesn’t seem like the smartest move, narratively. Added to that, Shang has been replaced too, meaning this is less of a remake than it is a reinvention.

That could be fantastic, if it means the movie truly spreads its wings, but it could also see the movie turn into a dud. Watch this space.
