10 Big 2020 Movies You Should Be Worried About

2. The New Mutants

Birds of Prey
20th Century Fox

On paper, there’s a lot here that should work. It shifts to a different band of Marvel mutants than we’re used to seeing on screen, and has a strong cast led by Maisie Williams, Anna Taylor- Joy and Charlie Heaton. Director Josh Boone knows how to make painful teenage dramas a success after The Fault In Our Stars too.

Unfortunately, with the FoX-Men over and the MCU yet to introduce X-Men, mutants are in a bit of a difficult place right now. It could be a fantastic stand alone movie which explores mutant characterisation in deep, unsettling and inventive ways like Todd Phillips’ Joker... but it probably won’t be.

The movie has been pushed back again and again and again, sometimes in conjunction with other mutant goings on but other times seemingly just because of the lack of faith in it. Williams was still filming the final season of Game Of Thrones when it was initially due to come out; now the dust of Westeros has well and truly settled and we’re still none the wiser.

Without the big names attached, it may well have been shunted out direct to DVD already. It’s hard to feel hopeful about this one.
