Drax had made it his life’s goal to slay Ronan the Accuser and avenge the deaths of his wife and daughter. Unfortunately, this desire for vengeance led to disaster when he impatiently summoned the Kree war criminal to Knowhere. Ronan arrived with a huge army, easily overpowering Drax and obtaining the Power Stone.

Instead of destroying Ronan, Drax gave him the ability to commit genocide on a planetary scale.

While Drax acknowledged his blunder and managed to stop Ronan from destroying Xandar, his mistake still had terrible consequences. Ronan used the stone to slaughter vast numbers of Nova pilots during the Battle of Xandar. In addition to representing a huge loss of life, this severely weakened the Nova Corps and left Xandar far more vulnerable.

Had Ronan not been able to use the stone, Xandar would have stood a better chance when Thanos arrived to decimate it a few years later. Furthermore, even if Thanos had still triumphed there, his forces would probably have been considerably reduced in the process, giving the Avengers a better chance of victory in Infinity War.
