10 Biggest Movie And TV News This Week (Aug 23)

9. Halt And Catch Fire, The Strain, Ray Donovan, And Masters Of Sex Get Season Renewals

It was a good week for television fans this week, as several high-profile shows and freshman series were given season renewals. Showtime gave season three greenlights to two of its dramas: Masters of Sex and Ray Donovan. They join already-renewed Showtime series Penny Dreadful, Shameless, Episodes, and House of Lies. The new seasons will be 12-episodes each, and begin production in early 2015. Meanwhile, AMC has renewed their new series Halt and Catch Fire for a second season, which comes as a bit of a surprise. The period drama starring Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Scott McNairy (Argo, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice) didn't hit a very high viewership average over the course of its ten episodes. However, it tapped into a specific adult demographic that the network liked, giving it enough of a leg up to graduate into its sophomore year. Over on FX, Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse's new hit show The Strain has been renewed for a 13-episode second season. The renewal comes early in the series' debut, as it still has seven episodes left to air this season. Ratings for the show have been great (climbing from 4.5 million to 11 million in repeats and digital playback), giving the network plenty of confidence to stick with the creepy thriller for another year.
