10 Biggest Problems Star Wars: Rogue One Faces (And How Lucasfilm Can Fix Them)
5. A Totally Dispensable Ensemble
The Problem: One of the biggest issues with a prequel is a complete lack of stakes; you know broadly how things are going to go down and which characters will be making it through alive. Rogue One has a converse problem; because we're dealing with the Rebel Alliance pre-Luke there's few familiar faces, with the entire central ensemble made up of new characters.
As such, there's not only the task of setting up six heroes, but also, because none appear in any later material, the niggling sense that most of them won't make it through the film anyway.
How They Can Fix It: Given how much the safety of major characters is treated as a problem with massive multi-film franchises - X-Men: Apocalypse, with its known future from the end of Days Of Future Past, is a great example - it seems strange this could be a stickler, but it certainly is a worry; when everyone's expendable, why should you invest?
The answer is, of course, good storytelling. You don't need five movies to set up a big emotional event, as 100 years of standalone cinema has shown, so what Edwards really needs to do here is make sure his story is engaging and the characters interesting. You know, make a good film.
