10 Books For Younger Readers That Should Be Movies

4. T-Rex At Swan Lake

Screen Shot 2013-06-28 at 10.15.08 To take a break from the serious, let's explore the absurd. I frequent libraries, but every few months, I will go with my roommate to a library and we will raid the picture books. We'll read one or two favorites--this is how she found out that I cry at the end of The Polar Express--but most of the time, we will find stacks of books that we have never heard of before. T-Rex at Swan Lake is something I found on our first excursion. I am a ballet nut and Swan Lake is my favorite, so when I saw the title, I had to read it out of very sick curiosity. Our story opens with a museum piece--obviously the titular T-Rex--overhearing two enthusiastic tourists talking about an upcoming trip to the ballet. He longs to go see what they are talking about. When he gets there, he can't resist taking part. Finding a tutu big enough for a T-Rex is just one of the problems with this plan. This would make an excellent animated feature and I would love to see the story fleshed out to include a little more backstory for the skeleton or if he ever lets the women know that they were responsible for his debut as a dancer. If nothing else, I believe that I would laugh myself sick at the ballet part.

That's Kaki pronounced like the pants, thank you very much, my family nickname and writing name. I am a Red Sox-loving, Doctor Who-quoting, Shaara-reading walking string quartet of a Mormon writer from Boston. I currently work 40 hours at a stressful desk job with a salary that lets me pick up and travel to places like Ireland or Philadelphia. I have no husband or kids, but I have five nephews to keep me entertained. When not writing, working or eating too much Indian food, I'm always looking for something new to learn, whether it's French or family history.
