9. David Cronenberg's Frankenstein

With Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein coming out this year, now is the perfect time to reflect on David Cronenberg's unrealised Frankenstein project.

Cronenberg has influenced body horror more than any other director thanks to his work on The Fly, Videodrome, Naked Lunch, and many others. With his track record, he seemed destined to adapt Mary Shelley's acclaimed novel, considering it's the most famous body horror story of all time.

Though it never came to pass, Cronenberg was set to helm a modern version of Frankenstein where he'd team up with Pierre David, whom he collaborated with on The Brood, which also revolved around a deranged scientist creating a new type of human.

In the Cronenberg on Cronenberg book, the director explained his incarnation of Frankenstein "would be more a rethinking than a remake. For one thing, I’d try to retain Shelley’s original concept of the creature being an intelligent, sensitive man. Not just a beast.”

As enthralling as this Frankenstein sounded, it never materialised.

Although del Toro's Frankenstein has high expectations, Cronenberg advocates are still peeved that this passion project never made it to the big screen.
