10 Changes That Make Beauty And The Beast Worse Than The Original
6. Longer Film Equals Bad Pacing And Structure
The 1991 animated classic was a very economic 84 minutes in length. This new 2017 film is 129 minutes. It's difficult to say whether this comes down to the editing or the script - or perhaps both - but the film simply doesn't have the same rapid development as the original animation. What's more, the added scenes change the plot in ways that are both irritating and downright annoying.
The changes begin right from the off as the spoken word prologue is removed in favour of actually seeing the splendour of the Beast's castle before its transformation into an abandoned shell of itself. So far not so bad.
But then strange minor changes creep in. Belle is busy teaching reading to a young local girl and is spoken down to by the head master of the village school. Then she invents a washing machine which is trashed by the townsfolk who apparently don't understand progress. Maurice is no longer a humorous and clumsy inventor but is downcast, mournful and terrified of Lumière and Cogsworth on first meeting.
And let's not even mention the love dialogue between a wardrobe and a harpsichord?
The film just moves way too slowly.
