10 Changes The Oscars Desperately Needs To Make
9. Abandon The Popular Film Award Discussion. Now.
The Academy insists that, while the award was not given out at this year’s ceremony due to reconsiderations of what the award entailed, there are still ongoing discussions as to how to incorporate this idea into future nominations and awards.
Considering the outcry from just about everyone against such an idea, it would be best for the Academy to just drop this discussion once and for all. Not only does it seem like a cheap way to pull in more of a mainstream cinema-going viewership, but it complicates the voting system greatly. What constitutes a "popular" film?
What if a lot of people vote for a film to win the popular film award and therefore don't vote for it to win Best Picture even though it deserves it? It's an enormous headache that comes across as patronising to films the Academy doesn't view to be as serious as their usual Best Picture crop.
The studios don’t want it. The actors don’t want it. The viewers don’t want it. No one wants it. Let it go.
