6. 100 Years of Solitude

One of the most famous works of Latin American literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez weaves together a work spanning generations of one family that involves the creation, life, and death of the city of Macondo. The novel popularized the use of magical realism, a style where seemingly impossible or even supernatural events are depicted in a way to seem believable. 100 Years of Solitude would be a difficult adaption because of the fantastical style it employs as well as the distinct feel that comes from it being a Latin American novel. With Hollywood producing more and more of the same stuff, a movie like 100 Years of Solitude, good or bad, would be a welcome change.
