10 Completed Movies You Will Never See
1. Batgirl
Even though Batgirl was set to be released on HBO Max in December, the DC spin-off got the boot after David Zaslav became CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery.
Although you can understand why the company would axe smaller or unrecognised projects, movie fans are really hung up on this decision. Not only is Batgirl a major comic book property, the film marked the first time Michael Keaton would portray Batman in 30 years. For that reason alone, this DC instalment had major hype. So, why did Warner Bros think it wasn't worth saving?
Well, let's break it down. Firstly, this cancellation is part of a bigger picture to restructure the future of the DC movie brand.
Even though Batgirl was meant to cost $70 million, its budget ballooned to at least $90 million. By running the numbers, WB figured it was too expensive to make its money back through streaming.
But, it can just switch to a theatrical release, right? Sadly, it's not that easy. Because Batgirl was never meant to be a hyper-flashy superhero flick, it couldn't compete with Marvel or other DCEU entries like Black Adam or Shazam: Fury of the Gods.
Not wanting to completely write the project off, the studio conducted test-screenings for Batgirl to see if it was salvageable. After the test-screenings went terribly, WB worried Batgirl could jeopardise future entries in the franchise.
Factoring everything in (especially the part where Zaslav realised his company was billions in debt), it was best not to release Batgirl at all.
