10 Completely Original Movies To Look Out For In 2019

7. Queen & Slim

Daniel Kaluuya
Universal

Release Date: 27 November 2019

Daniel Kaluuya has had an excellent couple of years on the movie front, netting an Oscar nomination for his turn in buzzy social thriller Get Out, and landing a sizable supporting role in Marvel's beloved box-office smash Black Panther.

Unsurprisingly, that successful combination of a smaller and a larger film is something the actor is looking to repeat in the near future, with a role in possible awards contender Queen & Slim followed up by his (likely) return in the Black Panther sequel.

The former - from Master Of None writer Lena Waithe - will follow a black couple who kill a police officer in self-defense, forcing them to go on the run. The movie will explore race relations and America's social climate, and will be packaged as a romantic drama infused with a sharp social and political commentary.

Kaluuya's presence will inevitably draw comparisons to Get Out, so Queen & Slim has a high bar to reach. But with a daring concept, a strong leading man, and a hungry first-time feature director at the helm, the movie is poised to strike a chord with both general audiences and awards voters.

In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
