Ripped Off: Memento

At the time of its release, Memento somehow did not get the fanfare that most Nolan movies get today. It was maybe due to this reason that an up and coming Indian filmmaker decided to copy the film and claim it as his own.

That filmmaker was AR Murugadoss, who took the central plot, themes, and characterization of Memento and created his Tamil magnum opus, Ghajini, in 2005. Ghajini follows the story of a business who loses his memory every 15 minutes, who is trying to find the murderer of his girlfriend.

When the movie was first released in Tamil Cinema, it was a smash hit. It was one of the most successful movies of the year and everyone involved in it was ascended to superstardom.

However, the story of this movie and this filmmaker does not stop there. After the overwhelming success of the Tamil language version of Ghajini, in 2008 the film was officially remade into Bollywood as Ghajini. So the Tamil movie, which was unofficially plagiarized from a Hollywood movie, was now being officially remade in Bollywood and what puts the icing on the cake in this story is that it was remade with the same director.

When the film was released, it was critically acclaimed, and at the time of its release was the highest-grossing Indian movie of all time.
