6. The Brood - The Brood
In The Brood, a woman called Nola is desperately trying to reclaim her daughter, Candice, from her estranged husband, Frank. When they were together, Frank realised how unstable Nola was and so left her, causing her to find solace in an experimental psychotherapy clinic, which aggravated her illness.
After Candice's grandmother is killed by a child-like creature, Frank suspect Nola is somehow responsible. Before long, Frank finds himself and Candice routinely being attacked by more and more of this brood of deformed beings.
Although it's unnerving to listen to the Brood's incessant hissing or watch them attack innocent children, the most disturbing moment is when a doctor describes the creatures to Frank. After conducting an autopsy on one of them, the physician calmly explains how each of the Brood are devoid of retinas, teeth, and sexual organs but have "beak-like gums" and a sac between their shoulder blades. The way he emphasises the creature has no navel, meaning it was never truly born, conjures all sorts of disturbing images in one's mind.
It is made all the more unsettling in the grotesque climax when it is revealed how The Brood came to be.
