5. John Ford

Just like Cecil B. DeMille, John Ford had a reputation for being a total hard-ass on set, but there's an underlying element of Ford's personality that makes him seem a little weirder than just an angry, cantankerous filmmaker. Ford is credited as being the only person to make John Wayne cry - just let that sink in for a minute - and was notorious for asking a lot out of his crew, even forcing them to sleep in stage-coaches during extensive location shoots. However, Ford certainly holds himself to the same tough standard; he stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day with a camera, even continuing to document the day's events despite being wounded. He would end up doing the same for the Battle of Midway. On top of this sheer ballsiness, stories do emerge that though he was something of a task-master on set, he was a big softie inside; he was famously asked by an actor if he could help pay his wife's medical bills, and though at first replying with insults, he later ensured the man received a $1000 cheque. And what's more, his enormous wealth allowed him to buy the couple a house
and pension them for life. Amazing.
