6. Lars von Trier

Lars von Trier is one of the most controversial filmmakers working today, known for his provocative sexual imagery in films like The Idiots and Anti-Christ, as well as the sure-to-shock Nymphomaniac out later this year. Though Anti-Christ features a scene in which a woman cuts off her clitoris with a pair of rusty scissors, von Trier is a devout Catholic, and this apparently helped him establish the famed Dogme 95 movement with which he is most commonly associated. This movement is proof alone that the man is crazy; Dogme 95's "manifesto" imposes a number of constrictions on those who pledge themselves to it, specifically that everything has to be shot on location and with hand-held cameras. These restrictions have become increasingly bizarre over time; he shot the entirety of Dogville on a soundstage -
everything. On top of this, he has bouts of depression, has a phobia of flying - so drives to the Cannes Film Festival from Denmark - and made a comment at the festival two years ago that was construed by some as supporting the Nazis. Pretty crazy...
