Event Horizon is a science-fiction horror film from 1997, and while it does have a sci-fi setting, it's all about the horror as the plot develops into the second and third acts. The movie is set in 2047 and features a crew of astronauts set on a rescue mission.

The mission is launched after the Event Horizon, a spaceship that had been missing for some time, spontaneously appears in orbit around Neptune. As the crew make contact with the ship and investigate inside, they learn that it was developed as a test for an experimental engine designed to open a rift in the space-time continuum.

When the Event Horizon passed into another universe and returned, it brought a malevolent entity along for the ride, and it begins infecting the crew in gory and horrific ways. One crewmember is lured to her own death via a hallucination of her son while another gouged out his own eyes.

Each death is more harrowing than the last, as the malevolent spirit from the other dimension that could only be described as hell continues to tear the crew apart. The effects and setting of the third act are horrific, and the movie plays out like a demented nightmare that stays with the viewer for the rest of their life.
