John Carpenter's The Thing was a remake of a black and white film from 1951, and like most movie reboots, it floored the gas on, making it far more gruesome and intense as the original. The movie is set in Antarctica, where a group of researchers stumble across a dog.

Of course, it's not really a dog, as it's a parasitic alien lifeform that assimilates and imitates other organisms. The dog was long dead and had been only a masquerade, so it could get close to humans to emulate them. Because it's nearly impossible to determine who is real and who is this... this... thing, paranoia abounds.

The researchers turn against one another as they try to determine which of them is the thing, leading several to be tied up while their blood is tested. They determine that setting a flame to a sample of blood hurts the creature, even if they are separated, but when the thing makes itself known, it's all-out war.

People die in horrific ways, but the parts of the movie that are truly disgusting are the various representations of the thing. As it becomes defensive or aggressive, it transforms itself into a gruesome amalgamation of the features of the person it last infected while displaying a gory visage of blood and entrails. The effects work was spectacular, and it's not something any viewer could easily dismiss from their mind.
