2. Jaws Taught Spielberg The Sea Was Not A Reliable Subject Or Set

Before the release of Jaws, Steven Speilberg was just another up and coming director trying to make a name for himself in the business. After its release he became a household name, and had helped to establish the summer blockbuster model in the process.

The film's success would also help him to establish more creative control over future projects. However, one of those future projects was never going to be a second Jaws movie.

With Jaws being a mammoth hit, the studio wanted a repeat of its profits and plans for a sequel were put under way. Always a bit unwilling to be involved in a follow up, seeing it as a "cheap carny trick", Speilberg did not initially respond to calls by the studio to get him involved.

Ultimately, it was the numerous difficulties he encountered during the first film that really put him off. The whole process was a nightmare from start to finish, running over budget and past its schedule. By the end of the film Speilberg had had enough of the sea and wanted a less problematic project to work on.
