10 Extremely Uncomfortable Moments In Classic Movies
6. Back To The Future - The McFlys Employ Attempted Date Rapist Biff
It’s probably no exaggeration to say that everyone has seen Back To The Future. It’s an 80s classic, full of memorable scenes and quotable dialogue.
But at the very end of the first part of the trilogy, there’s a very awkward moment that those paying close attention will look at and think “hang on…”
You all remember that famous scene where George McFly finally grasps his courage by the horns and lays out Biff Tannen, changing the future in the process. And in this amended historical timeline, Biff has been transformed from a bully into a comical yes man, employed by the McFlys as an apparent general dog’s body.
Nothing wrong with that, is there? Well think back. What happened just before George pulled that Tyson out the bag? Yeah, Biff literally tried to force himself on Lorraine. So in effect, the McFlys have given a job to her attempted rapist. It’s clear the film uses Biff’s new, cowed appearance as a plot device to show how events thirty years earlier have such an impact in the film’s present day.
But why would you expose your wife to her sex attacker on a daily basis, especially when you have kids? “Hey kids, yeah Biff was my bully at school, and he even – oh this is funny - tried to rape your mom, but he’s really changed” Even if he has changed, that’s a pretty callous move by George. He allows a walking, talking trigger warning into their home on a regular basis, to show how he’s the big man now.
Most incredibly, both he and Lorraine now appear to be slightly in awe of him, as this really quite disturbing piece of dialogue shows:
George: Biff. What a character. Always trying to get away with something. I've had to stay on top of Biff ever since high school. Although, if it wasn't for him...Lorraine: …we never would have fallen in love.George: That's right.
