10 Film Characters Who Were Secretly The Villain All Along
4. Alfred Pennyworth - The Dark Knight Rises
It goes without saying that Alfred is a great guy. He's taken care of Bruce Wayne like his own flesh and blood ever since his parents were murdered, and has supported him in his efforts as Batman for longer than many would be both mentally and physically capable of.
However, his decision to tell Bruce to quit being Batman and to go to live a happy life is actually incredibly morally mixed. On one hand, the young billionaire has spent his entire life grieving painfully over his parents, and being Batman is only keeping this pain alive in the Dark Knight universe, instead of helping him overcome it.
On the other hand, there are presumably still plenty of Gotham's rogue's gallery left in the city after the events of the film. Unless we're supposed to believe this version of the city only had three major villains, there's a ton of pure evil left there, and now nobody with Bruce's skill level to take care of it. Sure, he seems to set up Blake to take his place, but it appears he's going to have to do it without any of the training the Bat did.
It's good for Bruce that he got the happy ending he did deserve - but it comes at the cost of likely hundreds of lives, and Alfred quite happily convinces him that's the right call.
