5. King Harold - Shrek 2

As a frog turned into a man by the Fairy Godmother, it's safe to say King Harold has a pretty sad backstory.

However, the actual terms of how Harold turned human are easily forgotten about - because nobody is watching Shrek with hopes of there being in-depth lore.

As it turns out, Harold gained his human form by offering to marry his daughter off to the Fairy Godmother's son, Prince Charming. As such, the entire reason the opera-singing fairy hunts our heroes down is because Harold basically a-okayed it - and yet he avoids telling Shrek or his actual daughter about this until it's way too late.

Which he presumably avoids because he knows telling them will requiring him reneging the deal with the Godmother and becoming a frog again. So, for the majority of the film, good ol' Harry is totally happy for his daughter and husband to be totally murdered or magically maimed solely because he doesn't like being an amphibian.

Harold turns into a hero at the end of Shrek 2, when he sacrifices his human form in order to protect his new ogre son-in-law, but until then he's kind of a jerk. Then again, being a frog sounds pretty rough, so you can't blame him too much.
