10 Critically Panned Films That Will Be Future Classics
10. Killer Joe
A 78% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes might not suggest that critics disliked William Friedkin's extremely dark neo-noir, but don't be fooled: many did in fact hate it and let it be known that they thought the film went too far. Based off of a Tracy Letts play, Killer Joe was an early part of the 'McConaissance' that signalled the career rebirth of Matthew McConaughey after years of appearing in mediocre rom-coms where he leaned on the poster. In the film McConaughey plays 'Killer' Joe Cooper, a police detective and contract killer who will stop at nothing to make sure he gets the money he is owed by a family for a job well done. The film was rated NC-17 in America, basically the kiss of death as far as box-office is concerned, and is incredibly violent and troubling. Too troubling for some critics, who said that the film had went too far. Particularly with a scene towards the end of the film when McConaughey's character forces a woman to give sexual pleasure to a piece of southern fried chicken. This (and other scenes) led the Womens Film Critics Circle to nominate it for Worst Female and Worst Male images in a film in 2012. But the film is undoubtedly effective and engrossing and in years to come (once the shock wears off) it will undoubtedly have a more favourable reputation.
