10 Critically Panned Films That Will Be Future Classics
5. Passion
Passion's director Brian De Palma has long been a controversial and polarising figure. His supporters appreciate his intricate camera movement, use of old school suspense techniques and deep focus photography. He has helmed many iconic films, including Carrie, Scarface and The Untouchables. De Palma's detractors, however, accuse him of ripping-off Alfred Hitchcock, being a misogynist and favouring style ahead of substance. He has been behind the camera on the awful Mission To Mars and The Bonfire Of The Vanities. His most recent film, Passion, was accused of much of the same and was pilloried by many critics. It's 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes does not look good. Neither does the $1.3m box-office against a $25m budget. But Passion, an English language remake of French suspense thriller Love Crime starring Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams, isn't anywhere near as bad as some critics made out. Although the film does at times border on self-parody, it also has a keen sense of humour and puts a distinctly modern spin on the erotic thriller. This one could be appreciated more in years to come.
