10 Films For People Who Hate Fantasy

9. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

One of the best parts about fantasy is that anything can happen. There doesn't have to be rhyme or reason to why something is the way it is. Childish cartoon characters can tell adult stories. In the world of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, cartoons live side by side with humans. There is never an explanation as to why. This is just how the world works.

In this murder mystery movie, we see down on his luck, detective Eddie Valiant, played brilliantly by Bob Hoskins, hired to investigate a possible case of adultery involving Roger Rabbit's wife. But when said male adulterer turns up dead, Roger Rabbit becomes the number one suspect. The movie has murder, betrayal, and wacky twists and turns galore.

The movie proves that just because a fantasy movie has silly, childish cartoon characters doesn't mean it can't tell an adult story. The film is certainly not for kids. There's violence, seduction, murder, and alcoholism. However, adult themes shouldn't translate into taking it seriously. Many of us saw this movie as children, and we enjoyed the silly antics of all the looney tunes-type characters. It's only now, as adults, that we know that we were watching a gritty murder mystery.
