10 Films Hollywood Should Have Remade Instead Of Ben Hur
4. Pieces
Legendary among the horror cognoscenti for its bad acting, absurd storyline and over the top direction, Pieces is a masterpiece of so-bad-it’s-good cinema. Viewed late at night with an appreciative crowd, it can bring down the house with the best of them, and that includes Plan 9 From Outer Space.
In the hands of Spanish director Juan Piquer Simon, what should be a simple slasher movie becomes an unintentional parody as a bunch of Keystone Cops attempt to stop a black garbed maniac from cutting up women with a chainsaw at a Boston university. After nobody witnesses a student being decapitated on the front lawn in broad daylight, the Dean declares it an “unfortunate accident” and decides against closing down the campus. This leads to several more murders, most amusingly when a victim steps into an elevator with the killer, who she doesn’t realize is carrying a chainsaw until he revs it up.
Obviously, a straight-faced remake is out of the question, so a new version would have to be done in the style of Airplane! Throw in a cast that includes Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, and you’ve got the comedy smash of 2017.
