10 Films That Teased Great Sequels (That Never Happened)

2. The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises has probably aged the worst out of Christopher Nolan's trilogy. Since its release multiple plot holes have been unearthed - Bruce Wayne's back being fixed in seconds and his speedy transition back to Gotham for the finale - and certain elements have endured mocking - most notably Bane's at times indecipherable voice and Talia al Ghul's rather dramatic death.

One aspect that stood out from the otherwise fairly flat film was the final striking image as we see Joseph Gordon Levitt ascend towards the Bat Cave. Having previously discovered that his first name was Robin, in a rather throw away moment which if you blink you will almost certainly miss, this seemingly sets up a solo Robin film in Batman's absence.

This was not the plan according to Nolan who explained the open-ended finale as demonstrating "that Batman was not important as a man, he’s more than that. He’s a symbol, and the symbol lives on." His disinterest in revisiting this world in the form of a potential Robin origins film is disapointing as it does leave the audience wondering what could have been if an actor as great as Joseph Gordon-Levitt had taken over the mantle.
