10 Great Characters Ruined By Terrible Sequels

5. Oz - American Wedding

It Chapter Two Pennywise
Universal Pictures

Played to perfection by the underrated Chris Klein, American Pie’s Oz is the quintessential all-American love interest. A likeable jock who takes up choir in order to win over Mena Suvari’s quiet new girl only to end up really falling for her (and choir), Oz is the most socially successful of the series’ largely awkward protagonists.

Despite this, the initially glib character may be well meaning but he still needs to learn honesty and vulnerability. By the second film in the series he’s a more sincere and mature character, and one viewers are invested in the future of.

Which make it all the more surreal when he is inexplicably absent from American Wedding, the disappointing third instalment of the series.

Sure, Oz may return in the next film, 2012’s return to form American Reunion. But what was the point of that unexplained absence, particularly when even the character’s actor doesn’t seem to know why Oz was left out of proceedings?
