10 Great Films From 2015 You'll Never Watch Again (And Why)
4. The Walk
Robert Zemeckis recreation of Philppe Petits insanely dangerous walk between the twin towers on a wire is a technical marvel, managing to put the audience into his vertigo inducing shoes. Joseph Gordon-Levitt gives a spirited performance as the crazy dreamer Petit, though his French accent isnt always up to scratch. The film is pure fluffy whimsy; which is both a good and a bad thing. Why Youll Never Watch It Again: Like Gravity or Avatar, once the experience of the 3D fades theres not much substance left. The lead up to the high wire act is corny in the extreme, with voiceover narration being used to tell the audience exactly whats happening and why. The Walk is drenched in sentimentality too, which feels like overkill in what's already a pretty inspiring story. The dizzying final act works best on a big screen with the proper sound design, and once those elements are removed this scene loses a lot of the impact. Since the outcome is known well ahead of time, theres not much tension to be found either.
