10 Great Movies That Bombed At The Box Office

5. Fight Club

Fight Club is one of those near-perfect films of such astonishing craft that it boggles the mind to think that it was such a disappointment at the box office. While it did actually turns a profit - unlike most of the films on this list - it grossed a mere $100m against a $63m budget, significantly down on studio expectations, who surely envisioned the blokey premise, combined with Brad Pitt and countless shirtless men would be enough to bring in plenty of people from both genders. However, the lurid premise and rickety marketing campaign - which was shifted mid-way by Fox executives, anticipating that they would probably make losses on the film after seeing it for themselves - couldn't have helped things, even as word spread about its cracker-jack twist ending. A pop-culture phenomenon - which even incited the creation of real-life fight clubs - that also happens to be superbly acted, incredibly written and astoundingly directed, Fight Club is a film that nevertheless must have recouped a lot of its losses on home video releases, given its enduring popularity and listing in the likes of the IMDB's Top 250.
