10 Great Sci-Fi Movies For People Who Don't Like Sci-Fi
4. Repo Man
Alex Cox’s intense, timeless classic is the definition of a cult hit. Made for a song and co-starring one of the great cult actors (Harry Dean Stanton) alongside Emilio Estevez in his best ever role, Repo Man is the kind of delightful curio that could only be made by a team with total freedom.
Estevez plays Otto Maddox, a directionless L.A punk who finds work repossessing cars. In no time at all he is embroiled in a dangerous adventure involving extraterrestrial life and a shadowy government agency, dragged ever further into the craziness by a cast of wild characters.
Repo Man lays its cards on the table from the off, opening with a policeman pulling over a car in the desert only to be vaporised by a mysterious light, and just becomes more riotous than there.
Unsurprisingly it didn’t make much at the box office, but it was held in high esteem at the time and has only become more beloved as time has ticked on. There was no film like Repo Man before it, and while others have tried to recapture its vibe, that’s easier said than done.
