10 Greatest Rock Documentaries Ever Made
3. Sound City - Various
There's a lot more that goes into writing a great song than the person at the helm. Regardless of what kind of expertise you think you might have, all of the true classics are just as informed by the environment around them as they are from the personal experiences they draw from. It always comes back to a time and place, and Sound City is pretty much hallowed ground for generations of rock music.
Being one of the most overlooked studios when compared to the more lavish productions of today, Dave Grohl's dissection of the iconic facilities is one of the more down to earth documentaries about the creation of the music. Bringing in the likes of Rage Against the Machine, Tom Petty, and Rick Springfield, each of these artists approach the studio like visiting an old friend, willing to talk about the times they had as much as the actual songs.
Though the studio itself didn't have the happiest of endings after being closed down, Grohl injects some new life into this movie by bringing in the old guard to record new music for the first time in ages, which leads to some interesting moments like Trent Reznor working with Josh Homme and Grohl bringing in Paul McCartney for a Nirvana reunion that no one thought was possible. There have been a million love letters to our favorite bands, but this is the kind of love letter to the people who made these records classic.
