10 Hidden Comedy Horror Movie Gems Of The Last Decade
2. Sightseers (2012)
Whenever Ben Wheatley, Alice Lowe, and Steve Oram lend their names to a project, genre fans can be assured they’re in for a delightfully mad treat. Sightseers is no exception.
Chris (Oram) wants to show his new girlfriend Tina (Lowe) the exciting world of caravanning in what he hopes will become an “erotic odyssey”.
Not long into their journey, however, the
couple get a taste for blood when Chris “accidentally” runs over a litterbug in
a car park. From here, their mundane holiday is spattered with violence
whilst the couple find comfort in each other.
Fronted by pitch-perfect performances by Lowe and Oram, Sightseers is devilishly wicked black comedy. Murder and caravanning are two concepts that shouldn’t go together, but Wheatley (who collaborated with his leads on the script) transforms this strange premise into a distinctly English Bonnie and Clyde love story.
The holiday gets increasingly out of hand as the body count starts to pile up and a strain is placed on the pair's relationship. All of which leads to a suitably hilariously morbid finale that acts as the cherry on top of this cinematic excursion.
No matter how grim events get, it’s still better than an actual caravan holiday.
