10 Hidden Horror-Comedy Movies That Are Actually Terrifying
7. Meet The Feebles (1989)
Meet the Feebles is a cinematic anomaly on two counts. The first is that it subverts what you'd expect from puppets. It came along decades before The Happytime Murders with the idea of Muppet-Esque creations doing abominable things and trumps it by far with its overt vulgarity.
Then, there's its director, Peter Jackson. It comes as a surprise to many that before he was creating the greatest fantasy movies of all time, Jackson was making smut-filled splatter flicks. Of all his early work, such as Braindead and Bad Taste, this musical/comedy/horror is the most overlooked.
The story takes place in a theatre, where the Feebles (a group of goofy animal musicians and actors) perform their show. But, hiding beneath the jazz hands and musical numbers is a seedy underbelly of amateur porn, disease-riddled bunnies, organised crime, PTSD and all sorts of disturbing imagery. Jim Henson, look away now!
While comedy is the focus of this flick - with humour so dark and gross, it gives the whole thing a sickly feeling - it's also a terrifying experience thanks to how dark and depraved things get. There's a slew of violent moments, with death, gore and a killer finale that proves puppets can scare your pants off just as well as "real" people.
