After years of legal issues between original Friday the 13th writer Victor Miller and that first film's director - and wider franchise producer - Sean S. Cunningham, it finally looked as if the Friday the 13th series was set for a triumphant return in 2024. With those issues settled, Miller was involved in a Bryan Fuller-created A24 Crystal Lake TV series expected to premiere before the end of this year, and Cunningham was at tentative work on a potential new Friday the 13th movie.

And then, here we are, at the close of 2024, and there's been zero positive movement on either project. In fact, franchise fans were dealt a major blow when Fuller was fired from Crystal Lake midway through the year.

Still, Crystal Lake remains in development, with Welcome to Derry executive producer Brad Caleb Kane now on board as showrunner, the series aiming to start filming in Australia imminently, and a Halloween 2025 premiere date targetted. As for a new Friday the 13th movie, Cunningham has stated how any new film would not realistically be released until 2027, and he's currently been discussing pitches for a cinematic return for Jason Voorhees.

Either way, the prospect of having something new arrive in 2025 feels massive.
