10 Horror Movie Endings That Pissed Everyone Off

2. Marie Was The Killer - High Tension

A last-minute twist can make or break a story, and in the case of this New French Extremity slasher, it was the latter.

See, for the vast majority of its runtime, High Tension is a supremely suspenseful (and supremely gory) chiller about two women - Marie and Alex - on the run from a deranged psychopath. The pair suffer through countless near misses, are forced to see their loved ones murdered, and ultimately have to wrangle with the question of why this is happening to them specifically.

The answer to that comes in the final reel, where it's revealed that Marie has been the killer the whole time. It's here where High Tension pulls a Fight Club and makes it clear that we shouldn't have trusted what we were seeing, as instead of a man, it was Marie chasing down Alex due to psychotically falling in love with her.

It's the kind of twist that does work in the moment. It's big and brash and it leaves you thinking "holy sh*t!". However, it also reduces the entire movie to this one twist, which doesn't hold up to scrutiny in the long term.
