10 Horror Movie Monsters You Were Completely Unprepared For
1. Itzapapalotl - No One Gets Out Alive
Based on Fernanda Coppel's novel of the same name, No One Get Out Alive revolves around an immigrant called Ambar who encounters supernatural forces after moving into a crumbling boarding house.
In the climax, Ambar discovers her landlord intends to sacrifice her to the Aztec god, Itzapapalotl, which is sealed in the cellar.
Now, there's one aspect about No One Gets Out Alive that must be addressed - it's not very good. The Netflix original suffers from repetitive jump-scares, glacial pacing, non-existent character development, and a cliched plot. For this reason, you might expect the big bad to be just as disappointing, especially when it's revealed Itzapapalotl resides in a teeny-weeny box.
That's why it's so shocking to watch this gargantuan deity emerge from its tiny prison. Not only that, Itzapapalotl's design is masterful. Its body harbours cosmic horror elements, like a partially skeletal head, insectoid jaws, and a flappy moth-like body.
Despite its intimidating appearance, Itzapapalotl moves with a gentle grace, which accentuates the eeriness. Just when it seems like this demonic entity couldn't look any more spine-tingling, Itzapapalotl parts its legs, revealing its fanged genitalia.
The rest of the film is a drag, but this scene alone may give horror veterans nightmares for the foreseeable future.
