Colossus: The Forbin Project revolves around a supercomputer that's programmed to monitor the United States' atomic weapons. Believing Colossus is the only way to avert a nuclear war, the AI's creator, Forbin, allows it access to all government's systems.

What happens next? Exactly what you think. Soon after Colossus is activated, he merges with the Soviet's supercomputer, giving him control over both nations' atomic weapons. When the Americans try to disconnect the link, the computers began launching missiles, causing untold devastation.

The supercomputers then place the American and Soviet governments under permanent surveillance, threatening to bomb major cities if they attempt to interfere with their plans.

Although robots are often perceived as unthinking, Colossus showcases the ability to strategise on a human level. When Forbin's people realise Colossus is powerless without nuclear weapons, they prepare a three-year plan to secretly deactivate all the missiles.

Even though Colossus is aware of this scheme, he does nothing for months, purely to give humanity a false sense of security. When he finally comes clean, he blows up two major cities as a punishment.

Despite his callous actions, Colossus believes he's carrying out his object flawlessly. Because he was created to save humanity from themselves, Colossus sees his methods as harsh, but necessary.
