As anyone who has ever broken up with someone will know, there is nothing more terrifying than the scorn of a mother.

Maternal rage is on full display in the first Friday the 13th movie from 1980.

Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer), whose son Jason drowned in Crystal Lake in 1957, is out for revenge on the camp counsellors whose negligence she attributes to her boy's death.

She acts as the main villain of the movie, chasing down a new batch of counsellors until she is eventually decapitated by final girl Alice (Adrienne King).

Grief does terrible things to a person. Losing a young son is an awful experience and Pamela was just lashing out. However, her version of lashing out included brutally killing several young people.

None of this violence was ever going to bring Jason back. Ironically, Pam would have benefitted hugely from seeing her own counsellor and getting the support she needed in order to overcome her trauma.

Equally, she could have just looked a bit harder, because Jason was alive the whole time! We find this out at the end of the film, so what was all that stabbing for?
