10 Horror Movies That Got Too Silly To Be Scary

9. Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

New Line CinemaNew Line CinemaIt was billed as the clash that would define horror cinema for the new millennium. New Line Cinema's enormous 2003 crossover pitted two of the genres biggest icons against each other in a clash for supernatural supremacy. To start with, it holds together pretty well. Robert Englund's well-honed performance as Freddy Krueger and Jason's inventive kills are enough to hold together the first hour or so. Then, however, a worm with Freddy's face appears and smokes weed, in what is presumably an homage to the hookah-smoking Caterpillar in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. From there, it's pretty much downhill in the logic stakes. By the time the two monsters finally battle it out, the film has become so stupid that it's impossible to get excited. Freddy's dreamscapes were always bizarre, but it really devalues Jason's prowess when he is pinging around a boiler room like it's some kind of pinball machine. And the less said about that final scene the better. It's the very definition of a cop out.
