3. The Beast Of Gevaudan - Brotherhood Of The Wolf
Brotherhood of the Wolf follows Gregoire the knight, who's tasked with investigating the Beast of Gevaudan, an enigmatic creature that's slaughtered French civilians.
For the most part, the Beast of Gevaudan is built up masterfully. In the first 90 minutes, it's never seen clearly, with the camera instead lingering on the reaction of the Beast's horrified victims just as they meet their maker. There are shots of the Beast hurling its prey into the air with astounding force, indicating its unmatched strength and ferocity.
However, Gregoire ultimately learns the Beast isn't a supernatural creature at all, but a lion wearing elaborate spiked armour. Not only that, a secret society has conditioned the wild cat to slaughter their enemies so that they can seize control of the country.
Although it could be disappointing to learn the Beast of Gevaudan isn't a beast at all, that's not the issue. The issue is the Beast... looks terrible. Even though its design is creative, the Beast never looks like it's there due to the unconvincing CGI.
Using CGI was a baffling decision considering it's established that the Beast is an ordinary animal. If the filmmakers used an animatronic, a real lion, or a mix of the two, the Beast could've been legitimately soul-stirring.
