10 Horror Movies That Are Finally Happening

6. Haunted Mansion

Disney

20 years after the first movie based on Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, a reboot of that concept is finally on the way.

While Justin Simien's Haunted Mansion is scheduled to hit cinema screens this August, this is a movie that was stuck in development hell for over a decade. Most frustratingly, this is a feature that originally had the marvellous Guillermo del Toro on board to write and direct when Disney first announced the film back in 2010.

At that time, del Toro promised to make Haunted Mansion as a fun, family film, but likewise promised that the scares would be genuinely scary. By 2013, GDT had departed the project, with his version of the movie being deemed too scary by House of Mouse higher-ups.

Still, here we are in 2023, and this iconic Disneyland staple is once again bringing its charm to the silver screen. Pegged as a family-friendly horror-comedy, the film centres on Rosario Dawson's Gabbie and her nine-year-old son moving into the titular New Orleans mansion. As one would expect, it soon becomes apparent that this mansion is indeed haunted, and a ragtag team of experts are brought in to assist Gabbie in ridding the house of its spirits.

Joining Dawson and Chase W. Dillon - who plays her son here - is a pretty darn stacked cast, featuring heavy hitters such as Danny DeVito, LaKeith Stanfield, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Winona Ryder, and Jared Leto.
