1. Open Water

Across this list, there are movies that will put you off flying, pictures that will put you off train travel, and films that will make you question holiday rental homes. With this entry, it's all about being terrified to go in the ocean.

Chillingly based on a real story, 2003's Open Water focusses on a couple - Daniel (Daniel Travis) and Susan (Blanchard Ryan) - who decide to embark on a scuba-diving vacation as a way to help fix their strained relationship.

Having spent 30 minutes or so underwater as part of a group dive, our lovebirds return to the surface to realise that the boat and the rest of the group have left the area - with it explained how a bungled headcount meant Daniel and Susan were erroneously accounted for before the boat headed back to shore.

What follows is an unrelenting, traumatic, depressing tale of two people stranded in the middle of the ocean as great white sharks surround them. For Daniel, he ends up killed by these sharks. As for Susan, she eventually chooses to drown herself by the time Open Water comes to a close.

Jaws is a movie cited by many as causing them to be afraid of the water, yet Open Water tops that ten-fold when it comes to putting you off taking a trip and a dip.
