Being a single mother sounds utterly exhausting, so imagine having to raise a tot on your own and dealing with a haunting at the same time? This is exactly the situation Amelia Vanek finds herself in during the events of 2014's The Babadook.

Whilst in the midst of dealing with the loss of her husband and trying to raise her young son, Samuel, Amelia's home becomes the target of the titular ghoul, and it is far from the friendly Casper type. After coming into its line of fire after Samuel reads a cursed pop-up book - nice work, kid - Amelia must deal with this otherworldly menace, despite the fact that she has no idea where it is.

It may appear in brief glimpses and through visions of Amelia's dead husband, but Mr. Dook doesn't get his big moment until the film's final moments, when its exhausted victim finally snaps.

In a brilliant conclusion, Amelia actually ends up accepting the monster as the manifestation of her grief, learning to live with it instead of pushing it away. How cute... for a movie about a murderous ghost in a top hat.
