10 Huge Movies That Were Instantly Forgotten

3. Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow

Cowboys and Aliens 2

The hype surrounding Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow in 2004 was something else, given that it was the first film to be shot almost entirely on blue screen sets, with CGI backdrops being added in post-production - a technique later adopted by the likes of Sin City, 300, and The Spirit.

There was much industry buzz at the time that such a production pipeline could change filmmaking forever, and while that didn't ultimately come to pass, Sky Captain was nevertheless a compelling style experiment, even if neither its story nor characters could match its staggering visual design.

All the same, despite its singularly eye-popping aesthetics and a top-drawer A-list cast including Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie, the film fell off the map in record time.

It didn't help that Sky Captain was a box office bomb upon release, and while it seemed like the generally well-received sci-fi film would be reclaimed as a cult classic in the decades that followed, it's never quite happened.

This isn't a film that many scream about from the rooftops as a misunderstood masterpiece, but rather quietly admire for its ambition, ensuring it's been largely left out of contemporary film discourse.
