Of all the world-famous directors in history, few were as meticulous with their process as Stanley Kubrick. The man was notoriously difficult to work for, and his constant insistence on perfection made his movies... well, perfect, which meant he rarely shot scenes he didn't use.

Doctor Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is a satire about the end of the world, as brought about by one man's psychosis coupled with the red tape and ridiculous ineptitude of the government. It's hilarious, but in a subtle way, which may be why the final scene was changed.

Originally, Kubrick filmed a now-famous pie fight, which broke out between the military and government officials gathered around the table in the Pentagon's War Room. This was a straight-up custard pie fight like you might expect to find in a Three Stooges movie, and it was filmed to completion.

After reviewing the scene, Kubrick decided it didn't work, so he cut it. He then shot a completely different ending, which is what made it into the final cut of the film.

Unfortunately, Kubrick was manic about his unintended work getting out into the public, so he burned the negatives. Few photos remain of what must have been one hell of a fun scene to shoot.
