10 Intriguing Movie Roles Matt Smith Should Play
4. Snake Plissken
Another icon heading back to the big screen is Snake Plissken, the one-eyed, Clint Eastwood-inspired sci-fi mercenary who was unwillingly recruited by the government to sort out sticky situations in futuristic versions of New York and LA, respectively. Original star (and previously-mentioned Elvis) Kurt Russell choked on his coffee when he heard Brit Gerard Butler announced as a possible front runner for one of the character's mooted resurrections. If he's reading this, he might want to look away now as an even more radical selection is about to be suggested - a wacky limey named Matt Smith!
Above all, Snake is a man of stillness and, while Smith sometimes got rubbery and hysterical during his tenure in the TARDIS, he showcased some striking moments where he appeared to do virtually nothing at all. His sense of quiet menace was displayed most effectively in The Vampires of Venice, where he coolly threatened the chief villainess by telling her that he'd bring her down simply for forgetting a victim's name. This would lend itself brilliantly to a performance as Plissken.
He even conveniently wore an eyepatch and grew his hair out for the finale of Series 6, so producers wouldn't even need to do a screen test. If Smith can perfect a gravelly American accent, then surely he's a shoo-in for the man last seen condemning the world to a Luddite-based fate?
