10 James Bond Gadgets We Wish Were Real

3. Ericsson JB988 - Tomorrow Never Dies

Gadget: Bond€™s new phone in Tomorrow Never Dies is a doozy. It has several uses, and is early precursor to the all-encompassing smart-phone of today. Equipped with a fingerprint scanner, a 2,000 volt taser, an electric lock opener, and coolest of all, the ability to remotely pilot Bond€™s BMW 750iL, it€™s the Swiss Army knife of cellphones. It€™s used in many scenes, making it one of the most used, most versatile of Bond gadgets of all time. My favorite use, and yours too probably, is when he uses the remote control setting to rescue him from a doorway and then leads the bad guys on a subsequent chase through a parking garage, while piloting his car from the back seat. Real World Application: While it€™s not really all that practical to have a fingerprint scanner or taser on your phone, with a little reconfiguration the lock opener could have many uses - house, car, and office. (In fact, this would work as well, or better than the credit card key from #10.) Some of those features are already in use - mostly for unlocking and starting cars for us. But it€™s the driving and steering of those cars that is quite obviously the coolest must-have feature of this phone. As I mentioned, remote unlock and start functions are already in use, but what about rain or snow? Even if the car€™s already running, you still have to brave the elements to get to it. But should you have to? I think not. It€™ll be pretty sweet when we can have our cars meet us at the curb, or better yet, when we can send our cars through a drive through with money taped to the window. Laziness wins again!
